‘You are mistaken,’ answered the Lord. ‘What you just mentioned is definietly not the qualities of a Brahmin! A Brahmin must be happy with anything he has. Contentment is an important quality for Brahmins. If a Brahmin is not satisfied with three strides of land, they will never be satisfied even if all of the 27 lokas is donated to them!’

‘There is truth in what you say,’ agreed Bali. ‘Alright I will donate you three strides of land measured by your feet. Vindhyavali please get the water pot.’

‘Stop!’ cried Sukracharyar.  He had been watching the conversation in silence but now he decided to intercede because he identified Lord Vamana as Lord Vishnu.

‘This is no Brahmachari!’

‘Then who is He?’ asked Bali.

‘He is Lord Narayana in disguise.’

‘What!’

‘Do not make Him the donation!’

‘But I cannot reneg on my promise. I want to donate especially now since the Lord Himself is seeking alms from me!’

‘You will lose everything you own if you disobey me!’

‘I beg your pardon but I am unable to obey you on this matter.’

Vindhyavali approached Bali with the water pot. Bali got ready to pour the water in the palm of Lord Vamana but even though he tilted the pot, not a drop of water fell from the spout.

‘There is a beetle obstructing the spout,’ said Lord Vamana as He recogonized that Sukracharyar had taken the form of a beetle to protect his disciple. ‘I will clear the blockage,’ said the Lord as He used a darba grass to poke the eyes of sukracharyar on purpose and made him leave the spout.

Peria Azhwar sang the following pasuram to show that the Lord’s Sudarsana Chakram was present in the grass used to blind Sukracharyar.

“Sukiran kannai thrumbal kuthiya
chakara kaiyane acho acho”

The Lord blinded Sukracharyar because it was a sin to stop a donation from taking place.

As soon as the water fell on the Lord’s palm, to everyone’s surprise the Lord started to grow. He became so tall that with just one stride with His right foot He measured all the lower worlds and with His left foot He measured all the upper worlds. His left foot scanned through space measuring all the worlds and stoped at Brahma’s Satya Lokam. Lord Brahma looked at the beautiful foot of the Lord and worshipped the Lord’s foot by washing it with water. The water fell down through all the upper worlds as Akasha Gangai and finally reached Earth in answer to Bagirathan’s penance. Thus the holy water of Ganges is the Lord’s Sripada teertham.

‘I have measured everything with just two strides,’ said Lord Trivikrama. ‘Where shall I place my third stride?’

Mahabali bowed down in front of the Lord and asked Him to place the third stride on his head.

Did the Lord cheat Bali by asking him to give Him land equal to three strides measured by His tiny feet and the moment Bali agreed by becoming very tall?
