Thirupavai Pasuram 19

Nappinnai Piratti with Lord Krishna

After the girls sang the 18th pasuram, Thayar got up to open the door but Perumal pulled her back because He wanted to be the one to grant the girl’s requests. He didn’t want Thayar to grant their wishes as she always got a higher point for protecting devotees.
The girls saw that Thayar was not allowed to get up from the bed. They felt envious because Thayar was with Perumal on the comfortable mattress laid on a bed frame manufactured from the tusk of the elephant Kuvalayapeedam. Even though Krishna hadn’t killed Kuvalayapeedam yet, the beauty of the elephant’s tusk had been transferred to the frame in the same manner in which Perumal transferred the protective effect of the rope (thirumangalyam) worn by the wives of the Duryodanas to grant sarees to Draupadi. The wifes of the Duryodanas were widowed only after many years; the effect of transferring the rope’s protective powers to Draupadi didn’t harm their husbands immediately.
Perumal and Thayar were reclined on a comfortable, soft as well as fragrant mattress. The mattress was covered with a white bed spread. It was wide enough that all the 500,000 gopi girls could sleep on it; hence, they asked Thayar to allow them inside as well.

As Perumal held Thayar in His arms, His chest expanded in size as He was happy. Parasara Bhattar once asked Lord Ranganathan to listen to the composition he had written about Thayar. Perumal wanted to know why Bhattar did not chant the slokam in Thayar Sannidhi. Bhattar replied that as Thayar was Perumal’s sweet heart, he wanted to chant the slokam in Perumal Sannidhi first. Bhattar then asked Perumal to keep many inner vests in larger sizes nearby. Perumal asked the reason for this request. Bhattar answered that as soon as Perumal heard the glories of Thayar He would feel very happy thus making His chest expand which in turn would rip His inner vest.

Perumal is called as “avikaraya suddhaya” in Vishnu Sahasranamam.  He is Para Brhamam because He never undergoes any changes then how does His chest expand? Perumal’s atma (swaroopam) never changes whereas He changes His physical form to please us. The same Perumal can appear as baby Krishna to Yashoda and as a youth to Radha. Similarly He reacts to our words of praise to express His happiness to us.
Once, Nanjeer was asked By Parasara Bhattar to chant Tiruvrittam. As Nanjeer chanted the following pasuram he added an r by mistake to malandu thus altering the meaning of the pasuram to “Krishna felt very happy because Yashoda disciplined Him”.
As soon as Nanjeer chanted this pasuram Parasara Bhattar fell down unconscious. After Bhattar regained consciousness he asked Nanjeer to repeat the pasuram. This time Nanjeer repeated the pasuram properly but Bhattar asked him to repeat it with the error Nanjeer had made because Bhattar said that Swami Nammazhwar must have composed the pasuram to convey to us that Lord Krishna did feel very happy because Yashoda felt close enough to Him that she disciplined Him. As a result His chest expanded since He was very happy.
Perumal and Thayar argued by just looking at each other. Thayar looked at Perumal with her large eyes lined with collyrium which resembled a cool lake asking Him to let her go so that she could cater to the girl’s request but Perumal wanted to be the one to bless the girls. Thus they argued.
The beauty of Thayar’s eyes is described in this pasuram. Lord Hanuman looked at Sita Devi in Ashoka Vanam and tried to see how Perumal and Thayar formed the perfect match for each other. Lord Hanuman gave Perumals’ overall appearance 100 points but as he looked at Sita Devi he gave 100 points for just her eyes alone.
The gopi girls asked Thayar, ‘Why do you stop Him when He is about to come to us? Why aren’t you allowing yourself to be separated from Krishna for just a few seconds? This is unlike you, since as Sita Devi you allowed yourself to be separated from Lord Rama for ten months when you entered Ashoka Vanam in order to save the Deva Sthris. Later you allowed yourself to be away from Lord Rama for 1000 years in order to bless sage Valmiki so that he could write the Ramayana. Either you open the door for us or let Him come to us.’
Piratti couldn’t stand to hear them continue to plead. She informed Perumal firmly that she was going to open the doors for the girls.

An Acharyan always meditates upon the archai vigrahams at Divya Desams like Thirumalirumcholia which are like the breasts of Bhumi Piratti with love. A disciple should take care of all the other matters that the Acharyan has to attend to thus giving enough time for the Acharyan to meditate upon the Divya Dampathis without any disturbances. A disciple should never think about going separate ways from the Acharyan and must stay by the Acharyan’s ideology at all times. The disciple must feel grateful to the Acharyan for showing him the right path.
Nachiar teachs us that both Perumal and Thayar are competing with each other to protect us.
